Martin Whalen Hennebury Stamp regularly hires students from Canadian law schools after second and third year to work as articling students to fulfill bar admission requirements and after first year to work as summer students to provide them with exposure to the practice of law.
Students who have completed their second or third year of law school are permitted to commence their articling requirements for admission to the bar of this province. The rules and regulations for admission of students are located on the website of the Law Society of Newfoundland and Labrador under "students".
Summer and articling students work with senior counsel in all practice areas including: insurance, labour & employment, marine & fisheries, corporate, commercial construction, real estate, oil & gas, personal injury, family and criminal law. Students are expected to conduct research, prepare memoranda, draft pleadings and correspondence, assist with corporate, commercial and real estate transactions, all under the guidance of a senior lawyer.
Students are encouraged to attend and observe discovery examinations, court proceedings and tribunal hearings. The student´s learning experience in these activities is enhanced by assisting responsible counsel by drafting briefs, correspondence and other legal documents, file organization and note-taking as required. These arrangements help students develop and hone their skills and concurrently provide value to clients.
The firm offers a salary and benefits package which is competitive with other firms in St. John´s. Articling students, upon completion of law school, are enrolled in the firm´s health plan.
